A MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Programming) decomposition solution to the scheduling of heavy oil derivatives in a real-world pipeline

چکیده
This paper presents a novel approach to aid the operational decision-making of scheduling activities in a real-world pipeline, transporting heavy oil derivatives, which are products of less aggregate value, such as fuel oils, e.g. marine fuel. These products present special characteristics that influence their transport as the impossibility of being transferred at room temperature, due to their viscosity, or the use of shared tanks for different products. Thus, during the transport of such products, the entire pipeline network (and the tanks) must be maintained heated during all the pumping process. Such characteristics imply that a specific model oriented to this type of problem must be developed. The approach proposed in this work develops a decomposition procedure that uses a sequence of mathematic programming models and heuristics to solve the problem in hand. The proposed approach is tested using a real-world scenario, composed of a pipeline tree system. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Detailed Scheduling of Tree-like Pipeline Networks with Multiple Refineries
In the oil supply chain, the refined petroleum products are transported by various transportation modes, such as rail, road, vessel and pipeline. The latter provides one of the safest and cheapest ways to connect production areas to local markets. This paper addresses the operational scheduling of a multi-product tree-like pipeline connecting several refineries to multiple distribution centers ...
متن کاملA mixed integer programming approach for scheduling commodities in a pipeline
This paper addresses the problem of developing an optimisation structure to aid the operational decision-making of scheduling activities in a real-world pipeline scenario. The pipeline connects an inland refinery to a harbour, conveying different types of oil derivatives. The optimisation structure is developed based on mixed integer linear programming (MILP) with uniform time discretisation, b...

This paper addresses the problem of developing an optimisation model to aid the operational decision-making process in pipeline systems. The model is applied on a real world pipeline oil distribution scenario, which connects an inland refinery to a harbour, conveying multiple types of commodities. متن کاملA Stochastic Model for Prioritized Outpatient Scheduling in a Radiology Center
This paper discussed the scheduling problem of outpatients in a radiology center with an emphasis on priority. To more compatibility to real-world conditions, we assume that the elapsed times in different stages to be uncertain that follow from the specific distribution function. The objective is to minimize outpatients’ total spent time in a radiology center. The problem is formulated as a fle...
متن کاملAn Improved Optimization Model for Scheduling of a Multi-Product Tree-Like Pipeline
In the petroleum supply chain, oil refined products are often delivered to distribution centers by pipelines since they provide the most reliable and economical mode of transportation over large distances. This paper addresses the optimal scheduling of a complex pipeline network with multiple branching lines. The main challenge is to find the optimal sequence and time of product injections/deli...
